SCHOLARLY MEETINGS

In the nine years of its existence the History Foundation has arranged a large number of scholarly meetings, including 7 congresses, 31 symposia, 29 workshops, 5 series of talks, 24 lectures, and 13 panel discussions.

The first International History Congress with the title of "From the Ottomans to the Republic: Problems, Debates, Research" was held at the Middle East Technical University (Ankara) in 1993. The second, "History Education and the 'Other' in History", was held at the Bosphorus University (Istanbul) in 1995; the third, "New Approaches in Historiography and Museology: Globalization and Localization", was held at the Istanbul Technical University in 1999 and the fourth, "Biography and Autobiography in Historiography" was held in 2001 in cooperation with Bilgi University

On the third Thursday of every month a senior historian gives an informal talk at the Information-Documentation Centre, as a part of the series entitled the "Historian's Kitchen," topics being their work and the methods they employ. A summary of each talk is published in the following issue of the monthly Toplumsal Tarih.

The Foundation's Contact Bureau in Ankara, is conducting a series of talk entitled "The History of the Contemporary."

The History Foundation has also been organizing workshops where historians and other social scientists have discussed topics such as "Oral History" (with the Ministry of Culture), "Local Cultures in Global Cities" (with the Orient Institute and the Bosphorus University), "City and Social History Museums" (with the Rockefeller Foundation), "Past, Present and Future of Trade Union Training" (with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation), "Urban Historiography" (with the Housing Development Administration), "Institutional Historiography: Experience and Perspectives" and "Turkish Image in the West during the Republican Era".

The History Foundation has organized other scholarly meetings, including the "Problems of Conservation in Turkey," "Utopias on Istanbul," "Archival Work in Turkey," "History Education and Textbooks," "Osman Hamdi Bey and his Age," and "Internal Migration in Turkey."

The proceedings of a major portion of such meetings, including the First and the Second International History Congresses, i.e., "From the Ottomans to the Republic: Problems, Debates, Research" and "History Education and the 'Other' in History," as well as the symposium on "Children in Social History," have been published in the Yurt Publications series.
