PUBLICATIONS
In April 1992, the History Foundation started the publication of the quarterly periodical Istanbul to contribute to the appreciation and conservation of Istanbul and to provide a forum for the city's problems. Carrying contributions by historians, urban specialists, other social scientists, cartoonists and photographers, each issue of Istanbul also contains a dossier devoted to the comprehensive treatment of a chosen topic.
Five issues of Istanbul Biannual have appeared in English, containing selections from the periodical Istanbul, enabling specialists and foreign visitors or residents in Istanbul to have access to many articles on various aspects of the city.
Another periodical published by the Foundation is the monthly Toplumsal Tarih (Social History), since January 1994. The journal presents a fusion of the popular and the academic, each issue offering a number of interesting articles covering a wide field extending from prehistoric times to the present, the emphasis being on the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic. The journal also holds an annual "History Competition" for university students, to raise the students' history consciousness and to accustom them to scholarly research and writing.
Launched in 1987 by a group of academicians in the US, and published semi-annually since 1993 and in English by the History Foundation, New Perspectives on Turkey is a refereed scholarly journal containing articles dealing with Turkish society and history together with book reviews and abstracts of lectures.
A monthly bulletin, the Tarih Vakfi'ndan Haberler (News from the History Foundation) contains information concerning its current activities. It also provides a channel of communication between researchers engaged in various fields of social sciences. The bulletin, which can also be accessed via the Foundation's web-site, is sent to all members and subscribers by post or electronic mail.
Since 1993 the History Foundation Yurt Publications has contributed to the development of history consciousness in Turkey by publishing works on history and sociology by local and foreign authors. It is the only publishing house in Turkey that specializes in economic and social history of Turkey, Middle East and Balkans, from the earliest times to the present. With their contemporary approach to historiography, the books published by the Yurt Publications have been received with great interest not only in Turkey but also throughout the world.
More than 130 titles have been published in Yurt Publications series dealing with a variety of topics, including Ottoman Studies, Studies on Turkey, Theory of Historiography, Oral History, Memoirs/Travel Notes, Cities, Economic History, and From the Old Script to the New. The fact that a number of titles published by the Yurt Publications have been awarded some of the most prestigious book prizes in Turkey attests to its success.
The Yurt Publications has also undertaken the publication in the Latin script of works published prior to the alphabet reform. These include the 6-volume Sicill-i Osmani, containing short biographies of the Ottoman nomenklatura and published with the support of the Ministry of Culture, and, more recently, the 4-volume Lütfi Tarihi, a chronicle published in cooperation with Yapi Kredi Publications.
The History Foundation has also carried out significant work in the field of encyclopedia publishing. The 8-volume Istanbul Ansiklopedisi (Istanbul Encyclopedia) and the 3-volume Sendikacilik Ansiklopedisi (Trade Union Encyclopedia) were researched, written and edited by hundreds of experts and were made possible by the financial support of the Ministry of Culture.
The History Foundation further contributed to the cultural life of the country with a number of illustrated scholarly books, which included Istanbul'u Gezerken (Strolling through Istanbul) by Murat Belge, and Photography in Turkey edited by Engin Özendes (both sponsored by Pamukbank); Sinan's Art and Selimiye and Istanbul - an Urban History both by Dogan Kuban, (sponsored by Emlak Bank); Istanbul World City, edited by Afife Batur (sponsored by Yapi Kredi Bank) and Housing and Settlement in Anatolia, edited by Yildiz Sey (sponsored by Tepe Center for Architectural Culture).
The Balance Sheet '98 series, published in connection with the 75th anniversary of the Turkish Republic and sponsored by Is Bank, consists of 13 volumes. Constituting an important collection of works of reference that traces the progress achieved by the Republic in a number of different fields, the series includes titles on such topics as the transformation of life styles; fashions, colors, forms and sounds of the Republic; changing cityscapes and architecture; gender issues; the adventure of money; transitions in 75 years from subjects to citizens, from villages to cities, from machine wheel to chips; the portraits of those who set the wheels in motion in industry; ideas and the family albums of the Republic. |
